Ambient networks: Bridging heterogeneous network domains

Providing end-to-end communication in heterogeneous internetworking environments is a challenge. Two fundamental problems are bridging between different internetworking technologies and hiding of network complexity and differences from both applications and application developers. This paper presents abstraction and naming mechanisms that address these challenges in the Ambient Networks project. Connectivity abstractions hide the differences of heterogeneous internetworking technologies and enable applications to operate across them. A common naming framework enables end-to-end communication across otherwise independent internetworks and supports advanced networking capabilities, such as indirection or delegation, through dynamic bindings between named entities

Names, addresses and identities in ambient networks

Ambient Networks interconnect independent realms that may use different local network technologies and may belong to different administrative or legal entities. At the core of these advanced internetworking concepts is a flexible naming architecture based on dynamic indirections between names, addresses and identities. This paper gives an overview of the connectivity abstractions of Ambient Networks and then describes its naming architecture in detail, comparing and contrasting them to other related next-generation network architectures

Eine Wahl mit Folgen - Ausblick auf die institutionellen Konsequenzen der Europawahl

"Das Ergebnis der Wahlen zum Europäischen Parlament (EP), die vom 4. bis 7. Juni stattfinden, ist nicht nur ein Indikator dafür, wie die Abgeordnetenkammer künftig intern aufgestellt sein und welche Fraktion(en) die politische Grundrichtung in zahlreichen Politikbereichen der Europäischen Union (EU) bestimmen wird. Vielmehr wird mit der Wahl auch ein Prozess in Gang gesetzt, der zu einer grundlegenden Neuformierung weiterer Institutionen der EU führen wird. Der Ausgang der Wahl ist zunächst für die Gestalt der künftigen Kommission sowie die Ernennung ihres Präsidenten entscheidend. Tritt der Vertrag von Lissabon Ende 2009 oder Anfang 2010 nach einem zweiten Referendum in Irland, möglicherweise im Oktober, doch noch in Kraft, hängt auch die Besetzung weiterer wichtiger Ämter (insbesondere des dann neu zu bestimmenden Hohen Vertreters der Union für Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik, in geringerem Maße auch des neuen Präsidenten des Europäischen Rates) von der Wahl ab. Mit diesem Beitrag soll ein Ausblick auf die institutionellen Konsequenzen der Europawahl gegeben werden. Dabei wird deutlich, dass das Europäische Parlament entgegen der weitverbreiteten öffentlichen Meinung und trotz formal teils noch nicht festgeschriebener Kompetenzen bereits auf der Grundlage des Vertrags von Nizza maßgeblich Einfluss auf die personelle Besetzung der europäischen Institutionen nehmen kann." Description: Distribution of multimedia content is expected to take a leading role in the service portfolio of future communication networks. People are assumed to require access to multimedia content of various nature and format through different end devices and access networks. Especially within the context of co-operative networks, multimedia content distribution will face a number of challenges, as content should reach the consumers regardless of the available networks to deliver the content data and devices to display. Heterogeneity is though not only a matter of the content delivery paths and display devices, also the user himself will have different preferences concerning the content quality and media selection. It is commonly accepted that due to the above-mentioned circumstances content will need to be available in various formats or allow for adaptation. Still, the solutions available today or currently under investigation follow a vertical approach and are limited in scope as either the list of supported networks, devices or media types is limited
